A trip down South

Last weekend, I took a little trip down to Houston to visit my mum, who had flown over for a conference. For any of you wondering where-abouts Houston is in relation to Evansville, here’s a little map to help (with stars over Evansville and Houston for extra effect...):

The journey turned out to be a LOT more stressful than originally planned as I found out with about two days to go that I’d booked the flights for the wrong weekend, and then spent those next two days frantically trying to work out how I would manage to get there. Luckily, everything worked out and I arrived in Houston late Thursday night to greet a very jetlagged, excited mother.
We had the whole day on Friday together so we decided to check out downtown Houston a little. We went to the Rice Village and spent the morning talking and soaking up the sun over iced coffee, then headed to a cute little café on Westheimer Road for lunch. One thing we really noticed was how much you NEED a car here. We managed to work out the bus and transit systems, and discovered the joys of Uber, but to be honest it was such a pain not having our own vehicle. Plus, the roads are crazy. I mean, there was literally a TWENTY LANE highway just outside the city and they STILL get traffic jams... Westheimer road was pretty fun- there were a lot of vintage shops, tattoo parlours and graffiti covered walls, but it was probably all a little too ‘hip’ for my mum and I. We got lotsa good photos though!
Saturday and Sunday morning Mum had confernce shenenegins, which I was able to join (except from the 7am ones-I made sure to avoid those.) Then sunday afternoon we filled our time checking out Hermann Park, visiting the Natural Science Museum downtown and eating 'Tex Mex' (which was recommended to me by pretty much everyone I know from Houston, and which definitely lived up to it's expectations. SO GOOD.)
The best day by far was Monday-our last day, when we went to visit the Space Centre. I'm not really sure what I was expecting, but both me and my mum ended up absoutely loving it. We spent the entire day there touring NASA mission control rooms, seeing where all the astronauts train, and at the end this weird robot thing made us ice cream, so I wasnt complaining.
